Nasal Polyp Surgery in Houston

Breathe Easier with Expert Nasal Polyp Removal

If you’re constantly congested, struggling to breathe through your nose, or suffering from frequent sinus infections, nasal polyps may be the cause. These soft, noncancerous growths in the nasal passages and sinuses can block airflow, reduce your sense of smell, and make everyday life uncomfortable. At Dr. Matorin’s ENT practice in Houston, we offer advanced nasal polyp surgery to restore your breathing and quality of life.

Using minimally invasive techniques such as Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), Dr. Matorin helps patients find long-term relief with precision and minimal downtime.

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are painless, inflammatory growths that develop along the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses. They often occur as a result of chronic inflammation from conditions like allergies, asthma, chronic sinusitis, or immune system disorders. Though small polyps may not cause symptoms, larger or multiple growths can lead to:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Facial pressure or pain
  • Chronic congestion
  • Snoring or sleep disruption

Left untreated, polyps can cause persistent discomfort and recurrent sinus issues that affect daily living.

When Is Surgery Needed for Nasal Polyps?

Many patients start treatment with steroid nasal sprays or medications to reduce inflammation. However, when these conservative treatments don’t work or when the polyps are large or obstructive, surgery may be necessary to remove the polyps and restore normal sinus function.

Surgery may be recommended if you experience:

  • Chronic sinus infections that don’t respond to medication
  • Severe nasal obstruction affecting breathing or sleep
  • Polyps that return frequently
  • Loss of smell that is not improved with medications

Minimally Invasive Nasal Polyp Surgery (FESS)

Dr. Matorin performs Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), the gold standard for treating nasal polyps. This minimally invasive outpatient procedure uses a small camera (endoscope) inserted through the nostrils to access and remove polyps without external incisions. Image guidance (GPS for the sinuses) is used during the procedure to reduce the risk to important structures next to the sinuses, such as the eyes and the brain.

Benefits of FESS include:

  • No visible scarring
  • Precise removal of polyps
  • Improved airflow and sinus drainage
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Shorter recovery time

The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia, and most patients return home the same day. Recovery is generally well-tolerated, with many noticing significant improvement in breathing, sinus health, and sense of smell within a few weeks.

Whether you’re exploring surgery for the first time or looking for relief after failed treatments, Dr. Matorin can help you breathe easier.

Life After Nasal Polyp Surgery

After surgery, you may experience mild congestion or drainage for a few days. Dr. Matorin will guide you through post-operative care, including saline rinses and medication, to support healing and reduce the chance of polyps returning. Allergy treatments and medications, such as special monoclonal antibodies, may also be used to further reduce the chance of needing additional nasal polyp surgery.  In fact, repeat surgeries have become very rare when these additional treatments are used properly.

Most patients notice a significant improvement in nasal airflow, reduced sinus infections, and an improved sense of smell. Regular follow-up visits and ongoing management of allergies or inflammation can help maintain long-term results.
